Putting Student Athletics On a Fast, Future Track
By Hank Walshak
The culture of athletics runs deeply in the American blood. And South Fayette is no exception. We take athletics seriously, especially where students are concerned. Already a highly robust effort, the athletics programs of the South Fayette School District will now get assistance on future planning with the creation of the Athletic Strategic Planning Committee by the South Fayette School Board.
Why such a committee at this time? According to Denise Ford, Chair of the committee, the time is right. “In the last several years, South Fayette High School athletics have jumped from single A division to double A division, competition and participation in athletics have increased, and the school district has been building new athletic facilities and hiring new coaches. This committee will assist the South Fayette School District to carry this dynamism to a level of excellence into the future,” she said.
The team is now in place to take on the task. Joining Mrs. Ford on the committee are Joanne Mazza, Member Board of Directors, South Fayette School District; and members of the South Fayette School District Joe Farkas, South Fayette Athletic Director; and Joe Bradley, Assistant High School Principal. Seven South Fayette residents round out the committee membership Alan Silko, Kitty Williams, Bill Collins, Paul Yuna, Brian Allen, Peter Taglianetti, and Lori Coyne.
According to Mrs. Ford, the role of the Athletic Strategic Planning Committee is not to evaluate the work of present coaches. “That role belongs to the school administration and the South Fayette School District Board of Directors. The role of this committee is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of our current athletic program and then prepare an athletic strategic plan for the school district,” she said, and added “In this context, we will assess the future needs of the athletic department, booster clubs, the recruiting process, the hiring process of coaches, and how we market our student athletes.”
Mrs. Ford emphasized that it will be most important to determine how the committee can provide a dynamic athletic program to all student athletes in the future. “It is the desire of the committee to continue to meet regularly in the next few months and to present the proposed plan to the School Board at the start of the next school year,” she said.
