The requirements are this: be a good writer, be interested in a career in writing and be headed to a college or university this fall. You do not have to major in English or journalism to be eligible, but if you are going to study, say, organic chemistry, tell us how you hope to tie that into a career in writing.
The winner of the award will be determined primarily by who submits the two best short essays (no longer than 500 words each.)
The first essay should answer one of the two following questions:
1. Who is your favorite writer and why?
2. What piqued your interest in writing and why would you want to continue to write after college?
The second essay should address this question:
1. What did you really learn in high school?
To apply for the scholarship, send us the two typewritten, single-spaced essays along with a page containing your name, contact information, SAT scores, class rank, college you’ll be attending, career goals and anything else you think we ought to know.
Entries will be judged by our magazine’s editorial advisory board based on content and form. Don’t be afraid to be creative.
Applications must be received by May 27, 2005. The winner will be announced in the July/August issue of South Fayette & Neighbors.
